Creole-unanswerables: THE positioning of a Caribbean-American artist, Geoffrey Holder

Dr. Daniela Fifi, Ed.D an Art Educator and Curator that has worked in museums and galleries in the Caribbean and The United States. She is a doctoral graduate in Art and Art Education at Teachers College, Columbia University and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, New York, and a Master of Arts in Art Gallery and Museum Studies from the University of Manchester, UK.

This presentation explores concepts of creolization that characterize the aesthetic and artistic production of the Caribbean-American artist, Geoffrey Holder during the Civil Rights movement. Holder defined his work as belonging in the realm of “unanswerables”, that is, positioning his artistic production within conversations of creolization that are centered on transculturalism, transnationalism, and hybridization.

Join us for a conversation with writer/curator Angela N. Carroll and art historian/curator Dr. Leslie King Hammond about the release of their latest catalog and exhibition: Exploring Presence: African American Artists in the Upper South.

Exploring Presence: African American Artists in the Upper South, identifies a succinct selection of prolific visionaries who create from and are informed by the liminal realms between northeastern art metropolises and the South. Featured artists include Schroeder Cherry, Linda Day Clark, Oletha DeVane, Espi Frazier, Aziza Claudia Gibson Hunter, Martha Jackson Jarvis, Ed Love, Tom Miller, Joyce J Scott, and Paula Whaley. Though most were not born or bred in Washington, D.C. or Baltimore, MD, they each found, grounded, educated, and affirmed themselves in the belly of Black enclaves situated at the border of the Mason Dixon line in a region colloquially known as Up’South or the Upper South. Exploring Presence reviews the projects, interventions, activations, and constructions that each artist engaged between 1970 and the contemporary moment.

Through a contemporary reconfiguration of the black experience, his work catalogs a powerful record of environmental decay at the intersection of economic inequity, the commodification of industry, personal labor, and race.

In 2017, Nyugen Smith(USA/Trinidad/Haiti) and Marvin Fabien (Dominica/Martinique) presented, Lest We Forget, a multi-sensory performance derived from their on-going dialog related to the impacts of hurricanes and climate change in the Caribbean and the most venerable parts of the United States. Marvin Fabien had a penchant for, through his hypnotic use of sound, conjuring the aesthetics of the popular music culture of the Caribbean whilst simultaneously rendering hair raising Digital Performances that address key issues affecting the Caribbean region. Fabien was easily becoming an indelible force in the continued development of contemporary practice in the Caribbean/Global South. May we continue to remember his work through our continued efforts to amplify Diasporic narratives and perspectives.

Jennifer Mack-Watkins received her BA in studio arts from Morris Brown College, MAT from Tufts University, and MFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute.Jennifer’s work investigates the societal conformities that isolates being a woman and how society defines what femininity is based on a predefined pattern.She was a recipient of “The Elizabeth Catlett Printmaking Award” given by Hampton University Museum. The Library of Congress, Rutgers University,Agnes Scott College, Getty Library, The Newark Public Library, and Clark Atlanta University have all acquired her work. In the summer of 2015, Jennifer was selected to participate in the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory artist-in-residence program in Yamanashi, Japan. Mack-Watkins participated in the Rush Arts Gallery 20th Anniversary Exhibition and Print Portfolio that was exhibited in New York City and at Miami SCOPE and PRIZM art fair. The Joan Mitchell Foundation nominated her as a 2015 Emerging Artist. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, Art and Object, and Essence.  Jennifer Mack-Watkins  is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. She currently lives and works in both New Jersey and Georgia. 

My current bodies of work celebrates the beauty, importance, and complexity of positive representation of African American children and women in literature, media, and pop culture. I am interested in using aesthetics as a form of resistance against the erasure and invisibility of African American culture.

 

In the series ,Children of the Sun demonstrates how a child’s innocence can be seen as an act of hope and resilience. Through my art, I seek to provide a sense of assurance for all African American children and hope the work encourages imagination and aspiration. In the same way, I hope to encourage children to enjoy childhood while being aware of the injustices and challenges that lie ahead of them.
